Nigeria's Oil Communities Blame Oil Industry for Misery

Voice of America -- Barely a week after Amnesty International released a report condemning oil companies for widespread environmental damages and abuse of impoverished communities in the Niger Delta, some of the communities are talking about the hardships they face.

Oil has generated an estimated $600 billion since the 1960s in Nigeria. But most inhabitants of the country's main producing region have seen few benefits from five decades of oil extraction that has damaged their environment.

Most of the people in the region depend on agriculture and fisheries for their food and livelihood. Ojo Aweire, a farmer at Agbara, a small village in Delta state, is one of them.

"We are suffering and we have oil," said Ojo Aweire. "It [pollution] kills a lot of things, things we are planting,

Toppers -- so right you are! Unlike here in America where those who work hard, try to better themselves and plan for our own retirement are penalized by our liberal, left-wing government-elected officials, mainly the Democratic party. President Obama and his socialist cronies are going to bring this nation to its knees if they continue to they're current spending plans.

The oil companies MUST be held accountable for their transgressions and the government must be held right along with them.

If their leaders shared some of the wealth with the common folks and not putting all of the profits in their own pockets things would be economically and socially better. The people getting help from those removing the natural SOURCES profit from creating chaos amongst the citizens... By the way SOCIALISTS oil is not a RESOURCE. It will have been renewed after the next ICE AGE!!! Not the one the kiddies are watching and being brainwashed by in the movie theaters! Welcome to the current "Solar Minimum". No Sunspots, no Polar Ozone open holes!!!! Things are cooling down.

Greedy governments. Most of the oil companies in these developing nations are nationalized, with the huge profits being siphoned off by the ruling class. And the US goes along buying into all of this. Since Pres. Obama is trying to reduce our national oil production, the OPEC nations and others know they can charge almost any amount they want, and we will keep sending them BILLIONS of dollars a year.

Greedy oil companies, Nigerian and world-wide. And corrupt politics over there have kept that country impoverished needlessly for too long.

It's the Nigerian government and their lack of regulations, along with oil companies like SHELL who takes advantage of the situation and uses the people and distroys the environment. Enough blame to go around... but something definitely needs to be done.
