Gas usage worldwide grows 2.5% in 2008

Gulf Times – Qatar’s top-selling English daily newspaper -- The global gas and coal consumption grew last year while oil usage fell in 2008, BP said in its statistical review...released in Doha yesterday [that] gas consumption grew by 2.5%, below the 10-year average.
Consumption in the US grew by 0.6% as spot prices remained well below oil prices. Elsewhere, only the Middle East saw above-average growth, driven by strong domestic demand. [snip]
The largest incremental growth in world gas demand was from China, where consumption rose 15.8%. [snip]
Globally, gas production rose 3.8%, above the 10-year trend of 3%.
This was driven strongly by the US, which recorded its highest ever annual increase in gas production as strong activity in the development of unconventional gas resources raised output by 7.5%–-10 times the 10-year average growth rate.

So many statistics - some of which seem to contradict each other - that they make the article very confusing and of very little value.

It must be a modern-day miracle to increase world gasoline consumption without also increasing world oil consumption. Perhaps someone has created synthetic gasoline w/o letting us all know? Twisted factoids!

We need to bring industry back here, and, get back to a free enterprise economy. Lower taxes and regulation, and, raise tariffs, too. Otherwise, this recession will only get worse.

If they keep oil prices higher then people will find alternate energy source.
Greedy oil producers will eventually will be defeated by consumers.

The other article says that China is poised to lead the US in clean energy and then you compare those two growth numbers. Funny

So what happened to all that oil that were hidden in those unused oil tankers? The Speculators drank it all?

Yes those statistics are look to be an overly rosy view. Its curious how demand at retail fell in the US in units, but was not reflected in those statistics.

Because of China and India, we are seeing INCREASED gas consumption on a WORLDWIDE basis, except in the USA we have lowered our gas use- which is odd being that our population has grown in the past few years!!!

I still remember those gas prices in 2008. OPEC, speculators and big oil companies made BIG money last year didn't they? Just ask Exxon and others.

funny, the rest of the world always point the finger at USA, but China and India are by far the worst polluters in the world. We just use it more efficiently.

Have these people been on holiday for the past 7 months? Why are they now reporting 2008 useage? I suspect they're trying to drive up crude prices with this kind of "reporting".

This is one huge reason why the Kyoto Protocol and the Waxman-Markey (Clean Air and Energy Securities Act) are total jokes. We have alot of democrats and a handful of republicans who want to hamstring our economy for a generation when it will do nothing to curb pollution levels.

with almost 10% of the people with out jobs consumption will be way down for some time. Hope those that made gas go up 60% this last year go broke.

As the recession ends, consumption will rise. The questions is whether the oil producers will meed the demand.

Very confusing article. They say consumption in 2008 rose when we were being robbed blind by the oil industry?!? I think consumption declined. Maybe they are talking about Money. If so, the percentage increases are too low for the rise in price that occurred.

But we absolutely have to have an alternative fuel in place before China really starts using oil. A billion new drivers would run oil prices out of the solar system.

I am curious if they are referring to Natural Gas or Gasoline. I would believe this applies to Natural Gas.

They must be talking about Natural Gas since this is what Qatar produces. This is what turned them into a major country. Before the found these sources they were closer to a third world country.
We already know gasoline consumption went down last year due to gas hitting $4.
You are right it is a poorly written Obama press release... I mean article.

They are writing about gasoline and coal, but it is confusing and makes it seem they could be writing about natural gas. Badly written article... I mean press release.
