I've used yogurt 2-3 weeks past the "best buy" date that seemed fine and caused no problems. Does anyone know how to tell if yogurt has gone bad? After all, bacteria is the essence of yogurt.

Ask it; if it responds, it's bad!

Also - if it turns yellow or green (unless it's lemon or lime yogurt) something is seriously wrong in the shelf life department.

Grocery stores by law have to remove everything on the shelves by the sell by date and baby formula and baby food 30 days before. As for dairy products they have a sell by date for the person who is in charge of rotating the product. I've actually used sour cream about a month after it was opened and was past the date. As long as something wasn't open prior to the sell before date it should be fine for up to a month after. NO MILK THOUGH.

O.K. had one today marked "use by Aug 11". Looked, smelled and tasted fine. Will report back tomorrow.

Products are good for about two weeks after the expiry date. Companies post the date a bit early just to be safe. As there is bacteria in yogurt, it is ok for the two weeks...of course things like bread go off earlier than the date, sometimes.

The best test, in my opinion, is sight and smell...don't take a chance, if not sure, toss it.

one brand (maybe yoplait) says 'good til 1 week past exp date' (not the exact quote, though!) so any longer than that, then i would toss it

Top ten ways to tell if yogurt has gone bad

10) It pulls away from the side of the container
9) Long pronounced cracks in it's upper mantle
8) A gassy odor resembling burnt sneakers
7) A crowd of Fruit flies making hotel reservations
6) Green cloud hovering near it's epicenter
5) An occasional hissing sound generated from methane gas emissions
4) A Cockroach using it's crust as a toboggin course
3) The EPA making routine inspections of your refrigerator
2) A wildlife foundation taking up a collection for it's timely removal

and the top ten way to tell if yogurt has gone bad...

1) Your mother asks you "Do you want some yogurt?"

AFOS, as a frequent yogurt eater (I used it in place of sour cream and in place of mayo as well), I have always wondered this too. I've eaten it a week or so past the date and possibly even longer since I don't always check.

Does someone know a real answer to this?

Biblically speaking, it separateth and STINKETH mightily! I KNOW!

What I DON'T know is why the question makes you, according to StaceyM, "a sicko."

Oh, well!
