Ford's 3-cylinder EcoBoost wins International Engine of the Year

GasBuddy Blog --
Momentum continues to build in Dearborn, MI. Ford's 3-cylinder 'EcoBoost' engine has won top honors at the International Engine of the Year awards as the overall winner.

Voting was cast by 76 automotive journalists from 35 countries. It's the first time Ford has won International Engine of the Year in the award's 13-year history.

According to TheMotorReport.com, the win marks the second year in a row that a small engine has won. IEofY chairman Dean Slavnich says the fact that the small capacity engines continue to impress the most in overall terms, even against the larger higher performance engines, says a great deal about the direction of the automotive industry in recent years.

Henry Ford deployed local branches of the Ford Motor Company around the world about a hundred years ago... so it's nothing new.

Government Motors did likewise, in fact profits from Australia and Asia were swamped out by losses in North America back when they were in trouble.

The applications for the three-cylinder EcoBoost aren't here yet.

cheapmonkee ... my 94 gave me 54+ mpg driving uphill from Redding to Mt. Shasta on the I5, then back around on state highways through the mountains with two people in it.....

I'd love to get that again.

If it is better than the Metro engine.....great. The Metro engine was great.... very reliable.... easy to maintain...needed just oil changes and periodic tuneups...ran great and gave you more than 54 mpg highway....

Question is what has taken Ford so long. They (Ford) needed one of these cars decades ago to really replace the Fiesta (78-80) well....(got 49 mpg highway with that car....and had great power and performance)....

1.0 liter 3 cylinder is all the power needed if one knows how to properly use a manual transmission. My 1994 Geo Metro barely had 50 horsepower and it was just fine going through hilly country. These EcoBoost have double the horsepower so I will be very interested in this car when it comes stateside.

Ford EcoBoost 3 cylinder that could? Build 3 cylinder high RPM engines with a good design and close tolerances to get the maximum torque for a high MPG vehicle. Only for Europe and what about a high MPG diesel engine?
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe and reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Its got to be a lot safer to drive then motorcycles or scooters. Even if it doesn't have a lot of power it could be a good money saver. Size matters and sometimes small is best. Its not killing a lot of people in Europe. Lets make it available in the US

Is this the same 3-cylinder engine designed by Henry "Smokey" Yunick 50 years ago? The engine the auto companies would not build because it would cost them too much business?
