Town's Gas Boycott Leads to Lower Prices

msnbc.com -- Mayor Tim Baldermann and New Lenox residents are seeing gas prices come down for a change after a week-long boycott at the pump.

Prices in the town have dropped as much as 11 cents at some stations, while others have not given in just yet.

On Monday, Baldermann called for a boycott of gas stations in his town after prices hovered between $4.14 and $4.21 a gallon while neighboring towns saw significantly lower prices.

"If it was two cents they would have never heard from me," Baldermann told NBC Chicago Friday.

But prices were 12-to-20 cents higher, so he took a stand.

Marty Durbin, executive vice president of the American Petroleum institute, said the boycott was misguided. He explaining that each station has its own costs of doing business, and that's what led to ...

When you are off the beaten path, either your prices are lower to get more business or higher to make some money off convenience.

I paid $3.48 in Donalsonville, GA today! But it is ridiculous that we get excited about paying 3 1/2 bucks a gallon when it should be 1/2 of that.

In the Cleveland area prices range from about $3.50 to about $$3.90 with $3.75 about the average. If you are going to drive cross town it pays to check GasBuddy to top up the tank where it's reasonable.

Good for them for banding together to fight for what is right, instead of just grumbling and doing nothing about it. More places should do this to bring down prices everywhere.

Interesting.................prices in my area have dropped about the same amount over the same period...........without a boycott. And the indication I'm seeing is that prices in general are dropping right now. So did the boycott cause this or is it just a matter of timing?

This is an example where boycotts can be effective - when they're done locally.

Everyone has to get gas for there cars somewhere, so others will raise the price at the pump or, as the case is here the price in that town is coming down. It is hard to boycott when you use it everyday.

In that town highest prices Shell and BP?????

If everyone wants lower gas prices, then everyone should REWARD the lowest priced station in town, with their business...

How many time have you seen people pumping gas at a station and next door the gas price is lower???

Big oil knows if they can hook you with a gas card... At times people will still pay higher prices just to use their card with some reward plan...So send a message to all gas stations...

Business for lowest gas prices...

they did it right...not getting gas for a day while filling up a day B4 or after changes nothing. Cutting back on gas and not going for a whole week gets ya noticed!
