I recycle everything I can. In Yukon, Oklahoma, they charge to use the recycle bins. Thankfully, I don't live in Yukon.

Everything here goes into the politically incorrect Dumpster. I had a box partly full of old clothes and my BFF threw wet and sloppy trash on top. I almost made her take out the trash but I'm probably burying Goodwill and the Salvation Army in clothes that don't fit.

Hey Ld, I know it makes sense out here because our city's trash pickup company is making a nice tidy profit. However, like I said in my earlier post it may not make as much economic sense in rural areas. Irregardless, even just having a recycling program for aluminum, glass and plastic bottles and cans should make sense in any location. By the way it keeps the litter down as well.

Terzo - "It's hard for me to understand why other states don't recycle since it's actually pretty easy and makes economic sense. "

Actually, other than aluminum, recycling is a waste of money. It costs more to recycle than to simply dump trash in a landfill. You should watch the Penn & Teller show on recycling. It shows how most recycling is based on well meaning lies.

I constantly recycle. Living in Northern California it's the thing to do. However, the collection service does not recycle styrafoam. The larger 'chunks' are simply dumped into the landfill. Local packaging stores (UPS store, Post Net etc.) usually accept the styrafoam "peanuts" which they re-use.
Other hazardous materials must be taken to their facility. On Wednesdays and some Saturdays they even receive household hazardous waste - everything from used antifreeze to old paint and varnish.

Living in California, recycling has been standard fare for decades. It's hard for me to understand why other states don't recycle since it's actually pretty easy and makes economic sense. We pay extra for beer, soda, juice and water sold in bottles or cans at the store, but we get all of it back if we return them to a recycling center. A lot of recycling centers are located outside of grocery stores so it takes very little effort or time to bring a few hefty bags of cans or bottles to redeem back for money. In addition my city's trash company supplies us with 3 different kinds of trash bins at home. One for regular trash, another for green waste (grass clippings, branches, etc.)and lastly for recycling (cans, bottles, paper, cardboard, plastic, metal). What cans and bottles aren't redeemable at the recycling center get put into the recycling bin at home. I spend very little effort separating my trash, but I find my recycle bin is always at least twice as full as my regular trash bin. It probably does get a little bit more complicated once the trash trucks come for pick-up on trash day since they send 3 different trucks for each type of trash. However, the trash companies here are making big bucks. Maybe in areas of low density population, it doesn't make sense, but otherwise, it seems like a huge waste not to try, especially if someone can make a profit from it.

I'm currently in rural Indiana where there is no recycling. People that want to have recycling bins, which are later dumped in with the other garbage.

Yes I have been collecting lead for the last several years, smelted it and sold it to the highest bidder now that lead prices are back above $1/lb.

We have weekly pickup of Blue Bin, single stream- for metals, glass, paper, and most plastics. Grocery stores are starting to charge for plastic bags, or give points, or 3 cents per bag that you bring and use. One chain sells you a shopping bag made of recycled plastic and gives lifetime bag replacement as they wear out.

Our town started a recycle program so I am on it. I also made a compost barrel and a couple piles outside so that we can help our yard & garden do better. Sure makes for a lot less garbage.
I also save some cardboard to help make fires in the fireplace. I save all the wood & twigs that fall off the trees to use in the fireplace and any outdoor fires we might have.

borsht - "When I was a boy, milk and soda were sold in bottles that were reused many times. "

But now bottles can be made much cheaper, due to improved manufacturing techniques and materials. It makes reuse less cost effective.

I found stainless steel pipes to build my new exhaust with at the scrap yard.
Buying high end, heavy walled stainless pipe from the scrap yard was a fraction of the cost of buying new lame regular steel exaust pipe from the auto parts store.

Yes - Everthing that they will take that is, which is most plastic, paper, cardboard, tins, glass.
In fifteen years since our recycling program started with curb side pick up we went from two to three garbage cans a week to one garbage can every four weeks. Thats was for a family of five.

When my town introduced recycling I went to the public meeting. When they took questions I asked how they were going to pay us for our valuable stuff. After all, I was already getting money for my aluminum, and I wanted to know why I should give them my business. They actually expected me to just GIVE them my recyclables! They weren't going to pay me ANYTHING for them! What crooks!

Using bins is lame.
Recycle by the trailer full and you can get paid pretty good.

"Too bad the return on investment of my time is so minimal and/or nonexistent".

I don't know what you are talking about, but a trailer full of scrap steel gets me like $40.
Last time I demo-ed a double wide, all the steel, aluminum, window and door frames, roofing and siding got me nearly $1,000 (not counting the gun and tools I found).

I recycle. I consider it an investment in the future - for future generations who are unable to make the decision for themselves(including my unborn children and grandchildren).

Too bad the return on investment of my time is so minimal and/or nonexistent.

With population (consumers)numbers increasing almost exponentially (except in Western Europe)and the limited amount of natural resources available...at least until we start mining the moon and/or asteroids...recycling is the most efficient and economic means of maintaining supply.

This week I have rounded up and recycled nearly 1200 pounds of scrap steel.

I occasionally recycle lead. I collect tire weights, melt them down into 5 pound blocks and sell them on ebay.
The funny thing is lot of tire places don't know how to get rid of the used and broken tire weights that pile up around there ballancer with out paying some one to take them.

There is a good demand for used Apple stuff.

I recycled a Mac and used the proceeds to buy an iPad.

The Apple Specialist asked about the bigger than usual gift card and I told him about the Apple Reuse and Recycling program. It gets bad, IMHO, when a customer tells an Apple employee about stuff Apple does.
