Bangkok is remarkable for all those reasons, but I would suggest you get off the tourist path. Go to Surin and to Korat in the central plains. Smaller towns the people are friendly. (just like the US).

Sounds like you had an incident", eh lambwofur? They're called ladyboys, and if you have a hard time telling the difference, your taxi driver will save you, so no worries. My driver was good. He took me to all the good places. Anyways, redwoxer, how was your trip?

I made a half dozen trips to Pattaya Beach, the #1 R/R stop during the Viet Nam war. Made a couple trips up to north to Buri Ram and Prachachai. Made one trip all the way up to Udon Thoni, just south of Cambodia.

I was in Bangkok at least 10 times about 10-12 years ago. Thailand was my favorite country in the orient, as there is so many great temples, archetechure, etc. There is a great floating market (Everything sold from boats in a town of canals about an hour north of bangkok). I recommend taking one of the boat tours of the market. Many great temples in and around Bangkok also.

Hi redwoxer. I'm an american guy living in bangkok for the last 10 years. if you'd provide a little more info on your ages, mobility, travel style, where you'd like to visit, and interests, perhaps I can offer you some useful tips and maybe point you to some things rarely seen/experienced by the typical tourist only looking at the travel/tour websites. street food is fine, just eat at the places that have a lot of thai customers (they don't patronize the places with poor/unsafe food or prices that are too high!). btw, was in phuket for a week last month, went all over the island by car, its fine there, and the beaches are great.

I had a great experience in Thailand in two week's time. Flew into Singapore, then Penang (Malaysia), a rebel colony of mainly Chinese descendants, industrial capitalists, relative to the rest of conservative Malaysia. Experience the beaches of Ko Samui and Phuket (don't know if they're still recovering from the tsunami though). Could only manage Bangkok for a day (crowded, polluted... hold on to your wallet and passport). Then head to northern Thailand to Chang Mai and visit the hill tribe people. Head south back to Bangkok, perhaps by train, but don't miss out on Sokkuthai, one of the four ancient Thai kingdoms, but most known for their art history. Amazingly preserved ruins and temples--similar to Ankor Wat in Cambodia. Thai food is delicious, and I've never had problems with the street food. Thailand was a great adventure. Be safe!

I spent five weeks working in Bangkok last May/June (2004). Shopping is cheap. Don't eat street food. Do visit the Grand Palace, but don't listen to the liars on the street who tell you it is closed today and want you to go with them somewhere else. Ride the BTS (elevated train). Go to the Chatuchak Market on the weekend. If a girl is too tall and too beautiful, it is probably a cross-dressing man (a Katoey). Read Bangkok Bob's website: Bangkok Bob's
