A brand new set of four quality tires for most of the passenger vehicles on the road today can range from $400 to $700. (Some of us paid something in that range for our first car!) If you want to maximize the investment you have in your tires and extend their life and performance, remember to rotate them!

It's important because your front and rear tires wear differently. If your vehicle is front-wheel driven, there's more pressure on your front tires. Every mile and every start, stop and turn creates friction, heat and wear... more so on your two front tires. That's why it's necessary to rotate the tires front to rear several times during their life cycle. By doing this you even out tread wear, reduce the impact of uneven weight...

Funny how the article doesn't mention pulling out the cars manual to find out how the tires need to be rotated. You shouldn't always trust your mechanic.

Blarney!!!!!
..The total amount of wear is identical - be it primarily to 'the front pair' or divided equally between both pair.
...IF YOU DON'T ROTATE, you may have to replace the front tires after 40k miles, while the rear ones last almost 80k.
...IF YOU DO, and the alignment and balance are okay, you'll probably get around 60k on all four (and drive on 4 borderline tires for the last 20k) because the wear will be kept equal, pay up to $30 for each rotation, or waste a couple of hours that could be better spent changing the oil (and NOT every 3k miles). Who cares???

I rotate my tires regularly. With the price of tires I would recommend all drivers to do the same.

Most reputable places will rotate your tires for free when they do your oil change, If they don't I wouldn't bother with them and find a new place. I rotate my tires every other oil change which puts me about every 6k miles.

If you can do it yourself you can actually save money. I don't know if paying someone to rotate them pays off or not.

Now this was interesting for me, I never knew that there was a particular way to rotate tires based on the drive (i.e AMD, FWD, RWD, AWD) of your vehicle.

1 new tire and 3 worn tires can be dangerous. Not only can your car have a pull but 1 new tire will brake better in all weather than the worn tires.
you should atleast get 2 and always out them on the rear for safer driving especialy in wet weather

What are the effects of having three worn tires and one brand new one? Does this mean that just because I had one blow out I have to buy a whole set of tires versus just the one that blew?

IF YOU HAVE BIG REAR TIRES

If your fronts and rears are different sizes (from factory) you (have RWD and) can only L-R switch. This will do more harm than good if your tires are past 80% useful life, especially in the front. Radial belts can break when reverse loading on old tires. If this happens, you will see lumps (dips) on the sidewall (not bubbles) and this can even give a little shimmy in the steering wheel though in balance. Ask the highly-paid experts you take your car (corvette, porsche, etc.) to about proper rotation. FWIW, some new sports cars have 4 specific, non-rotatable tires. But you don't carry 4 spares, just one.

IF those charts are confusing, ignore them. (could be argued many ways) But don't ignore the headline! IMHO, RWD should rotate an X pattern, until/unless there is irregular wear, then do an M, W, or ||. FWD could be any as long as front and rear switch. AWD (4x4) would depend on vehicle use, but again X is best when full time RWD.

BTW, slight L-R uneven wear on the front inner or outer (but not both) is quite commonly due to driving habit, not a mechanical problem.. it has to do with being able to turn right more often without stopping, and a tighter right than left turn on average.
