Perhaps Donneriono, who started this topic several weeks ago, will comeback to this thread to explain why "points for posting a news article" would be a good idea, other than "Surprised you don't do this." Perhaps some reasoning would make the idea more understandable. I don't expect my opinion will be changed, but a little rationale might add to the original post.

Very, very true but any points for posting news articles would still likely cause far too many unnecessary articles to be posted. GB moderators would have to work 24/7 to deal with all of the 'Not Newsworthy' postings.
No need to offer points for any news postings. In reality, the points system works well just the way it is.

I would be against points for posting news articles for most of the reasons already discussed below, however IF the site was considering doing so, they could limit the points to the first news article each member posts each day, no need to make it points for five articles.
Come to think of it, I'm also against points for reading news articles. It seems... pointless (no pun intended.) Members should be able to read news articles and vote on them from the same page, just as the site now allows comments from the same page as the individual news article.

When this topic first appeared, I mostly ignored it as being "yet another MORE POINTS request". But on further reflection, I see that it's something worthy of active disapproval, even though it's unlikely to be seriously considered by the mods.
Such a change would be catastrophic, effectively killing off the news feature, for the reasons already noted in earlier messages. Moreover, for those of us who enjoy playing the "max points" game, the change would require us to choose between spending time searching for newsworthy articles, posting articles known to be crap, or foregoing the max points -- which, quite probably, would mean dropping positions on the scoreboard, and perhaps no longer caring about points at all. It's quite possible that such a change would cause people to give up on GasBuddy entirely.
Donnerino, I'm afraid you've made an unworkable suggestion. But thank you for posting it, anyway, and I hope you don't take the objections personally. Your topic was still a meaningful contribution to the site; it brought out some explicit discussion of the issues involved.

So you want Gasbuddy to encourage the posting of 3000 news articles each day? That will not work at all.

As it is now, there are many articles posted to the site each day. While a high percentage of these are newsworthy, there are a lot that are not. We also currently get a number of duplicates, sometimes on the same day and sometimes over the days following the original post. Allowing points for posting news would only serve to increase the overall volume to a point where GB moderators would not be able to keep up.
Gas Buddy, your explanation is well presented. I agree that a big increase in article posting would simply force many, which may be of value, off the Newsville page.

"innundated" meaning that all the people that now get points for reading five news articles - which doesn't interfere or affect the general membership, will each be posting five news articles, which will result in two things. The news article area gets inundated by simply posting to the one "location", and many of value will simply be forced to the bottom by newer article posts (making the contribution negligible). It's not as if it would be multiple "message posts" in any of the tens of thousands of Just For Fun or Off Topic topics; it would be everyone "dumping" the singular location, and would negate any value of news articles as there now is.
Inundating is a good word. Said another way, yes, there's a max for everything, but it will be five for each daily Gas Buddy member, all in one place.

But there's a max for everything - 5 posts a day. What do you mean "innundated"?

The quantity of news articles is not lacking and even without points, newsville was abused. I can't imagine how badly it would be abused if points were involved.

maxstar, I agree. If points were given for posting news, GasBuddy would need many more moderators just to get rid of the ones that were not newsworthy.
Donnerino, there have been so many 'news' articles posted here that have not been newsworthy it would be a surprise to see GasBuddy promote the idea of more people posting news. Overall, the site seems to get a reasonable number of articles each and every day. Please be aware that the site does give points for reading and posting comments to the news.

I agree with Maxstar - we would get inundated with more worthless stories.

I would be concerned that points for news articles would result in a flood of news articles being posted, regardless if they were relevant or not.
